Just like us, many dogs suffer from anxiety. Olive has developed a fear of thunderstorms. She shakes, pants, and climbs all over you when the storms roll in. Ruby, labeled with mild separation anxiety on adoption, is a nervous Nellie anytime I leave her home, or anytime I take her with me for that matter. Let me share the two calming aids for anxious dogs I’ve come to rely on for managing their stress.

A black dog peeks up nervously from the bottom of the frame.

Sources of Anxiety In Dogs

Just like us, many dogs suffer from anxiety. Sources of fear-based anxiety in dogs can be from loud noises, like sirens, thunderstorms or fireworks. Triggers for social and environmental anxiety in dogs include unfamiliar people or dogs, riding in cars, going to new places, or other changes in normal routine. Dogs experience separation anxiety when left alone, or separated from their favorite people or other pets.

ThunderShirt Dog Anxiety Vest

When it comes to calming aids for anxious dogs, the first I ever purchased was a ThunderShirt dog anxiety vest. Just like swaddling an infant provides a feeling of safety and security, the ThunderShirt creates a constant, gentle pressure to soothe your anxious dog.

My dog Skip was terrified of thunderstorms. I was hopeful the ThunderShirt would be a miracle. It has a money back guarantee. I had nothing to lose!

ThunderShirt For Dogs

Let me temper your expectations. It’s not as if Skip was no longer scared of storms or oblivious to thunder. But the ThunderShirt took just enough edge off. He no longer climbed all over me and I was no longer scared he’d literally drop dead from fright. That was a win in my book and I kept it.

I have a ThunderShirt Classic in heather grey – it was the only style available at that time. It’s well made and has held up for years though many uses and machine washes. Olive now uses it regularly during summer thunderstorms. You can also purchase a ThunderShirt Sport or ThunderShirt Polo, each available in multiple colors. All ThunderShirts are available in seven sizes from XXS – XXL.

Composure Calming Chews by VetriScience

There are a lot supplemental calming aids for anxious dogs on the market. To be honest, I always though of them as snake oil. I first learned of Composure by VetriScience from a friend. It was not long after adopting Ruby and she was a nervous wreck.

I had my veterinarian review the ingredients for safety and then I gave them a try. After all, VetriScience also offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee. Composure is now a staple I keep on hand at all times.

I watch the girls when I’m gone with my Blink camera system (read all about it here). Before using Composure, Ruby was agitated the entire time I was gone. She’d get on the sofa, then off the sofa, go in the cove, then out of the cove, walk around the room, back to the sofa, then back to the cove…the WHOLE TIME.

After using Composure, she’s settled when I am gone. From reviewing the camera footage, I see she usually sticks close to Lemon and settles in next to her. I’ve seen Ruby stay in one place for over an hour, which was unheard of before. I’ve also seen her play with her toys and play with Olive. It doesn’t knock her out and she maintains her same personality.

I also rely on Composure during thunderstorms or seasonal holidays with fireworks. Like the ThunderShirt, Composure does not completely eliminate anxious or fearful behavior, but it takes the edge off just enough. You can safely double or triple your dose in times of exceptional stress.

It’s helpful to give Composure ahead of time when possible, as many dogs are more difficult to calm once they are already highly agitated. Composure works quickly and lasts for up to 4 hours.

Be Prepared

The 4th of July will be here before you know it. If your dog gets nervous or scared during fireworks, go ahead and pick up one or both of these calming aids for anxious dogs. You’ll then have several weeks to get your dog used to wearing the ThunderShirt or testing the dosage of Composure that suits them best.

At meal time, do you blink and your dog’s food is already gone? I will admit, at first, it seems like fun and games. You marvel at just how quickly your dog inhales a meal, give them silly nicknames like “Hoover,” or post a seconds-long video on social media. But consuming food too quickly poses a number of health risks for your dog. If you can relate, consider trying these slow feed options for dogs eating too fast.

Why Dogs Eat too Fast

If your dog is suddenly ravenous or eating too fast when they previously did not, it’s time for a conversation with your veterinarian. Changes in appetite or eating behaviors can be an indication of a medical problem, like a metabolic condition, parasites, or other infection. For the purpose of this post, I’m assuming you have already ruled out a medical condition.

Competition for resources is another reason dogs eat too fast. Your dog may have come from a large litter where they competed against siblings to nurse. Dogs with history as a stray may not have known when their next meal would come. If your dog is or was part of a pack not properly managed while feeding, they may eat quickly to ensure others won’t take their food. It’s important to manage pack feeding to alleviate competition for food.

Some dogs just love to eat! I can relate.

Why It’s Dangerous If Your Dog Eats Too Fast

Choking is a big risk when dogs eat too fast. Gulping down a meal, your dog won’t chew properly. This can lead to food getting stuck in their throat and blocking their airway. This medical emergency is frightening for both you and your dog. Read What To Do If Your Dog Is Choking to learn more.

Dogs eating too fast may regurgitate their food. Regurgitated food can be inhaled into their airway, which may result in pneumonia.

When dogs eat too fast, they are at increased risk for gastric dilatation-volvulus, or GDV, more commonly referred to as Bloat. Bloat is a condition where your dog’s stomach fills with gas, fluid, or food, and becomes twisted. It progresses extremely fast and it is fatal if not treated. Read more about the signs, treatment, and outcomes of Bloat here. If you suspect your dog has Bloat, seek medical attention immediately.

slow feed options for Dogs Eating Too Fast

There are lots of slow feed options for dogs eating too fast. Something to keep in mind is that one solution does not fit all. You may need to try several options to find the right solution for your dog.

Another tip is to find more than one slow feed solution for your dog and then rotate them. Even challenging solutions can become less effective when used routinely. Be sure to change it up on them!

Slow Feed Bowls

When looking for slow feed options for dogs eating too fast, consider their bowl. Obstacles in the bowl will force your dog to slow down while eating.

DuraPet Premium Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl

I purchased a DuraPet Premium Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl years ago. It has a raised hump in the middle which your dog has to eat around. There’s a permanently bonded non-skid bottom and it is dishwasher safe. It’s a high quality bowl. With regular use, mine remains looking like new. However, it is not the most challenging of slow feed options for dogs. It was perfect for one of my dogs at the time, but not the other.

Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl

The Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl is a best seller for this brand with over 1 million bowls sold. The reviews on both Amazon and Chewy speak for themselves. What I like about this bowl is the variety! The Fun Feeder is available in multiple sizes, colors, and maze styles. It can also be used with wet, dry, or raw food diets. It is made of food safe plastic (BPA, PVC, and phthalate free) with a non-slip base, and is top rack dishwasher safe.

LE TAUCI Ceramic Slow Feeder Dog Bowl

If you prefer a ceramic bowl, try the LE TAUCI Ceramic Slow Feeder Dog Bowl. It also comes in multiple sizes, colors, and maze styles, suitable for varied diets. It is dishwasher safe, and as an option, you can purchase this bowl with an oak stand.

Think outside the Bowl

Sometimes the best slow feed option for dogs is something you might already have on hand. Remember how I said the DuraPet Premium Stainless Steel Slow Feed Bowl didn’t work great for one of my speed eaters? If I’m honest, none of the slow feed bowls I tried with Ginger worked for her. She quickly learn to flip any bowl that presented her with a challenge.

The ultimate solution for her obstinance was a large stainless steel baking sheet like the one below. The raised edge kept her food mostly contained, and the open flat space allowed the food to spread out, preventing her from gulping.

Snuffle Mats

For portions of dry kibble, using a snuffle mat provides an enrichment activity that ultimately slows your dog’s consumption. Using their sniffer as a guide, your dog will have to forage the snuffle mat to find their food.

While there are oodles of cute snuffle mat options on Amazon, I’m partial to the ones that are machine washable. No busy dog mom has time to hand wash a snuffle mat! These tend to be the simpler designs, however, the simple design is really easy to ruffle some dry food into them without a lot of effort. And your dog won’t care that their snuffle mat doesn’t look like a flower or a taco!

Snuffle Mat Favorites

LAMTWEK snuffle Mat

I like the large 17″ x 21″ size of this mat, as well as the edge guard that prevents the kibble from falling out the sides of the mat. It’s not a deal breaker for me, but don’t count on the suction cups unless you have a very smooth tile floor.

PET ARENA Snuffle Mat

This snuffle mat is a great value! It’s adjustable with a drawstring, allowing your dog to use it more like a bowl or flat like a mat. Pull the string tight for compact storage when not in use.

LIVEKEY Snuffle Mat

My favorite thing about this snuffle mat is you can connect multiple mats together to get just the size you need!

Puzzle Toys

Puzzle toys are great slow feed options for dogs eating too fast. They’re not just for treats! Make mealtime an enrichment activity by feeding your dog their regular meal from a puzzle toy.

Y’all know how I feel about the West Paw Toppl. And I have a host of healthy recipes for filling your Toppl as a treat. But the Toppl is perfect for meal times too, especially with the recently added XL size. Two Toppls can be interlocked for an extra challenge (S to L, or L to XL).

West Paw’s brain game fun doesn’t stop with the Toppl as they have added the Rumbl to their puzzle toy lineup. Designed to fit a variety of dry treats or kibble, the Rumbl wobbles and rolls to sporadically reward your dog. Available in two sizes, the S fits 1 cup of kibble and the L fits 2 cups.

West Paw Zogoflex Puzzle toys

Toppl

Rumbl

Both Toppl and Rumbl are made in the USA from non-toxic, zero-waste, recyclable Zogoflex. They are dishwasher safe, and they are backed by West Paw’s Love It Guarantee.

Take It Slow

Considering the health risks when eating too fast, it’s important to consider these slow feed options for dogs. However, no bowl, snuffle mat, or puzzle toy is indestructible, so it’s a must that you supervise your pup when using these items.

Remember, one solution does not work for every dog. Keep trying – there IS a solution that will work for your dog!

Have y’all seen those West Paw Toppl recipe posts on Instagram for #toppltuesday? They are so creative! I liken them to a fancy blood mary with literally ALL the garnish. I’m so impressed by these creations, but…who has time for that?! If you’re looking for an easy and healthy West Paw Toppl recipe, you’ve come to the right place.

A chocolate Labrador and a white Labrador stare at a filled Toppl with wide eyes

When it comes to “Instagram vs. Reality”, I’m definitely on the reality side of the equation. Even if I did take on the challenge, Olive probably wouldn’t touch it. We are firmly in the keep it simple camp, and I’m always looking for small tweaks to change up the basics. My Skinny Chunky Monkey is a super simple, and healthy, West Paw Toppl recipe that does just that!

what’s the skinny?

Just like The Fluffermutter, this healthy West Paw Toppl recipe uses PBfit Pure Peanut powder. It’s 100% pure peanut powder. With no added sugar, no salt, and 82% less fat than most regular peanut butter options, PBfit Pure Peanut is – dare I say – a healthy peanut butter for your pup, and for you too!

Using PBfit Pure Peanut is just like using regular peanut butter, but without the high-calorie, high-fat guilt! Mix the powder with a bit of water to reach your desired consistency, and then use it in any recipe calling for peanut butter.

You can even add PBfit Pure Peanut powder directly to any recipe having a bit of moisture content to it, and skip pre-mixing it with water all together.

skinny chunky monkey

If you don’t love Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey®, we cannot be friends. What’s not to love? Bananas, nuts, chocolate…mmm! This healthy West Paw Toppl recipe is a “skinny” spin on the ice cream classic that’s completely dog-safe and delicious!

A chocolate Labrador stares at her filled Toppl with wide eyes, flanked by her sister Labs.

We all know chocolate is considered toxic for dogs. And though my dogs don’t really know what they’re missing when it comes to chocolate, I want to spoil them in ways like I spoil myself! As a dog-safe chocolate substitute, I’m using Aussie Unsweetened Carob Chips for this healthy West Paw Toppl recipe.

Ingredients for a West Paw Toppl recipe: bananas, a package of unsweetened carob chips and peanut butter powder.

Be sure to select an unsweetened carob to avoid giving your dog unnecessary added sugar. Carob is free from the theobromine and caffeine that make chocolate harmful for dogs. It has a naturally sweet and rich flavor allowing it to pass as “chocolate” for dogs…we won’t tell them ours tastes better.

Prepare the peanut butter using PBfit Pure Peanut, then smear it all around the inside of the Toppl. I use a Stoppl from Paws in Earnest to avoid any side spillage, but I still make sure to cover the hole with plenty of peanut butter. It’s a tasty surprise when the Stoppl is removed.

Cut a few slices from a soft, ripe banana and set aside. Using a fork, mash the rest of the banana to a chunky consistency, and fold it into plain, non-fat Greek yogurt, along with the carob chips. Spoon the yogurt mixture into the prepared Toppl, top with the banana slices, and freeze.

How many times a day does your dog want to go out? And then right back in? And out again? If your answer is in double digits, I hear you, and I see you. The struggle is real! Last year, I finally added a wall entry dog door, and it’s been one of the best dog friendly home improvements I’ve made.

Yellow Labrador mix sits next to her wall entry dog door.

What is a wall entry dog door?

As a dog owner, you surely have seen dog doors before. Typically, they are framed at the bottom of an actual door, or as an insert to a sliding glass door. But the wall entry dog door provides your dog an entry/exit straight through the wall. With a telescoping tunnel design, they work with walls of various thickness. This type was perfect for me because my back door has a glass panel that wouldn’t allow for a standard doggie door.

Yellow Labrador mix stands halfway in and halfway out her wall entry dog door.

A wall entry dog door is designed to fit between the wall studs. Anyone who’s a little handy could tackle the installation. I had exactly one place that worked for this dog door, and it involved moving an electrical outlet. I am not exactly that handy, so I called in a professional to get the job done.

Choosing a wall entry dog door

I selected the PetSafe Wall Entry Dog Door because I was familiar with the brand, the price was right, and the reviews online were generally positive. Available in 3 sizes to suit your dog’s size, the door works for any wall that’s 4 3/4″ – 7 1/4″ thick. PetSafe also offers a separate extension kit to accommodate thicker walls. Check out their installation video here.

The PetSafe Wall Entry Dog Door frame is made from PVC. It has a double flap design, with magnets at the bottom, to provide energy efficiency. A quick adjustment to the flap height will generally correct any concerns you have with gapping, or a flap that doesn’t return properly to the magnet. It includes a locking slide-in panel to close off the door and control access.

If you live in an area that experiences extended freezing temperatures, a dog door with a PVC frame is not for you. In the extreme cold, PVC may become brittle and crack. You’ll want to choose a dog door with a metal frame like the aluminum Baboni Wall Entry Dog Door.

If you need a larger dog door to suit your dog’s size, the aluminum Endura Flap Wall Entry Dog Door offers some of the largest dog doors around. Their “Large” door is 3″ taller than most other brands. And they also offer an “XL” door that’s 23″ tall.

freedom to come and go

A word of caution: Adding a dog door is not an invitation to leave your dog completely unattended. For both pet safety and home security, I always secure the dog door each night before bed, and also anytime I leave the house. I want the girls to have the freedom to go outside when they please, but I also want to be close by to ensure their time in the yard is still safe. I can also quickly address it if they make themselves a nuisance by barking at neighbors.

Every 4-6 weeks, I clean the flaps inside and out, as well as the inside of the telescoping tunnel. This little bit of maintenance has kept our dog door looking as good as new in spite of its routine use. I would love to frame it out, or add a little sliding barn door, to give it some style! There are so many ways to make the wall entry dog door not only functional, but also a stylish addition to your home.

With a wall entry dog door, gone are the days of letting the girls out, and in, and out again, about 100 times a day. Or if you were like me, allowing the AC to flow freely out the door when I left it open a crack for the girls, electric bill be damned. They are now free to come and go through their very own dog door. It just might be the best dog friendly home addition I’ve made!

Does your dog love peanut butter? Do you suffer a little bit of dog mom guilt as you slather that Xylitol-free goodness into their West Paw Toppl or KONG enrichment treat toy? It’s such a high calorie treat, and it can lead to unwanted pounds. I want to tell you about a better peanut butter option for your dog! And, it’s the better half of my super easy, two ingredient West Paw Toppl recipe: The Fluffermutter.

Chocolate Labrador jumps for joy over West Paw Toppl Recipe The Fluffermutter

I admit it. Lemon and Ruby LOVED the Pumpkin Diced Latte Toppl recipe. But Olive, not so much. “There’s chunks in this mom. Mom, these apples have skin on them!” She’s picky, and likes the basics. And she LOVES peanut butter. But giving your dog peanut butter is like giving your kid a smart phone at dinner. It’s not the “best” option, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

a better peanut butter for dogs

Peanut butter is a high fat, high calorie food. Giving your dog too much is an easy path to weight gain. Too much fat in their diet can also put dogs at risk for pancreatitis. And if you’re not careful, many brands sneak in unwanted sugar and salt. What’s a health conscious dog mom to do?

Two Labradors check out their container of PBfit Pure Peanut

Let me tell you about my guilt-free peanut butter secret weapon…PBfit Pure Peanut! It’s 100% pure peanut powder. No added sugar, no salt, and 82% less fat than most regular peanut butter options. PBfit Pure Peanut allows me to give Olive a treat she loves, but without any of the dog mom guilt.

How do they do it? Plain, roasted peanuts are pressed to remove much of the oil (that’s fat and calories y’all!), and then they’re ground into a fine powder. When mixed with water, this powder returns to the creamy peanut butter goodness our pups know and love. This is a game changer!

How can I use PBfit for dogs?

Using PBfit Pure Peanut is just like using regular peanut butter. Once mixed with a bit of water to reach your desired consistency, use it in any recipe calling for peanut butter. And honestly, if your recipe already has a bit of moisture content to it, you can just add PBfit Pure Peanut powder directly without pre-mixing it with water.

The FlufferMutter

Ah, the Fluffernutter! You know…creamy Marshmallow Fluff and peanut butter between two slices of bread. That childhood delight is my inspiration for this dog friendly variation, and it’s sure to please even the pickiest of pups (I’m looking at you Olive).

The Fluffermutter (see what I did there 🤣) is a simple two-ingredient West Paw Toppl recipe, and it’s literally the easiest enrichment treat you’ll ever make! Let me be clear: this recipe DOES NOT USE Marshmallow Fluff! That would not be good for your dog. Instead I’m swapping in creamy, non-fat Greek plain yogurt, and using PBfit Pure Peanut butter.

Three Labradors look over a bowl of yogurt and peanut butter for their West Paw Toppl Recipe The Fluffermutter

After mixing your peanut butter using PBfit Pure Peanut, smear the peanut butter all around the inside of the Toppl, being sure to completely seal the Toppl’s side hole. Don’t make the peanut butter too smooth, or it may not hold leaks once you spoon in the filling! Yep, I learned this the hard way. Or, skip the leak hassle all together, and use a handy Toppl stopper, like the Stoppl from Paws in Earnest.

As for the filling, you can cut to the chase and spoon in non-fat Greek plain yogurt. Or, for the love of peanut butter, stir in the PBfit Pure Peanut! It can be whatever is left from your mix, or just add the powder straight into the yogurt, stir well, and fill the Toppl. It’s literally THAT easy!

The Fluffermutter

The EASIEST two-ingredient recipe you'll ever make for your dog’s Toppl, or other enrichment treat toy! Based on a childhood favorite, this recipe uses creamy non-fat Greek plain yogurt and Xylitol-free peanut butter, made guilt-free with PBfit Pure Peanut powder.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Author Recipe from Ellen at affluentdogs.com

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Xylitol-free Peanut Butter made from PBfit Pure Peanut powder and water
  • 3/4 cup Plain, Non-fat Greek Yogurt

Instructions

  • Prepare peanut butter to desired consistency using PBfit Pure Peanut and water.
  • Spread about half the peanut butter around the inside of the West Paw Toppl, carefully sealing the side hole for leaks. Optionally, use a stopper to prevent leaks during preparation.
  • Stir remaining peanut butter into the Greek yogurt. Optionally, stir in 1-2 tbsp additional PBfit Pure Peanut powder.
  • Spoon the yogurt mixture into the Toppl.
  • Freeze for an extra challenge!
  • If used, remove stopper before serving.

Notes

Use 2 parts PBfit Pure Peanut powder and 1 part water +/- to achieve desired peanut butter consistency.
If not using PBfit, be sure to choose a Xylitol-free peanut butter.  And don’t actually feed your dog Marshmallow Fluff! 😂

Do you know about Coop Home Goods adjustable pillows? If yes, then you know already know it’s the best damn pillow your money can buy. Now, Coop has launched their Sanctuary Pet Bed. And I’m here to tell you, this pricey purchase is worth is every penny! Let me assure you, this Coop Sanctuary Pet Bed Review is NOT a sponsored post. I love their pillows, and now I love their pet beds too!

Out with the old

I’m a dog mom of three, and I have at least FIVE dog beds in my house at any given time. The two kept in my bedroom were in need of replacement. At six years old, the foam was no longer supportive enough, and I also wanted a new style. Something that would look good in my own sanctuary space, but also feel good, so the girls would actually use it.

What I was looking for in a dog bed

Aside from looking good and feeling good, there’s a couple must-haves when it comes to dog beds.

  • A water resistant liner
  • A fully washable cover that’s easy to remove, and even easier to get back on.

Not all of my dog beds have a waterproof liner. But for the beds that are more likely to be slept in overnight, I like that extra protection. I’ve had seniors with incontinence issues overnight, accidents after anesthesia, and epic droolers. Having that water resistance is an important factor in keeping it clean.

The other thing that keeps beds clean is a washable cover. If you’ve ever struggled to remove a dog bed cover – or worse, struggled to put one back on – then you already know how very important it is for it to be easy. And not just easy enough, but like, REALLY EASY.

What I got in Coop’s Sanctuary Pet bed

Coop’s Sanctuary Pet Bed has everything I was looking for, and so much more!

The bed’s thick orthopedic memory foam foundation is fully supportive, and has a water resistant exterior liner. It also has an adjustable pillow top, filled with Coop’s proprietary blend of memory foam and microfiber. Like Coop’s pillow, it’s considered adjustable, as you can add or remove filling to best suit your dog’s comfort. The pillow top’s exterior liner has a water resistant top layer, and a breathable bottom layer.

There’s no canvas or faux sherpa cover with Coop’s Sanctuary Pet Bed. It’s made from a durable, upholstery-grade chenille fabric. It’s only available in one color, but it’s a beautiful, neutral shade which would complement almost any decor. In other words, this doesn’t look like your typical dog bed. It’s like a luxury piece of furniture for your dog.

But seriously, the cover!

The cover on Coop’s Sanctuary Pet Bed is not just a high quality, attractive fabric dog bed cover that’s fully washable. It’s also the EASIEST dog bed cover to remove and put back on!

Its unique two part design is what makes this dog bed cover so easy to clean. The elastic bottom cover simply slips over the foam base, and has an anti-slip backing. The separate top cover unzips completely from the bottom cover. The zipper is recessed between the foam base and the pillow top, making it less obvious and less accessible to your dog, but super easy for you.

Best of all, this dog bed comes with two top covers, so you always have a clean top cover on hand. You can unzip one top cover to throw in the wash, and zip on the second top cover in 20 seconds flat. No more waiting on the wash, and absolutely no wrestling this dog bed back into the cover.

Don’t worry, the bottom cover is completely washable too. You just won’t need to wash it as regularly as the sleeping surface top cover

The bottom line on Coop Sanctuary Pet bed Review Bottom line

Let’s state the obvious. The bed is expensive! But you’re not buying your average pet warehouse dog bed. Coop’s Sanctuary Pet Bed is an investment in a high quality, luxury item, and it’s built to last. I have no regrets on this purchase.

It has one color option. But it’s a really neutral choice of high grade fabric that’s ideal for most decor. And let’s face it. When you’re making a purchase like this, you want something with real style, and this bed has it!

I seriously cannot say enough good things about this dog bed. If you’re in the market for a dog bed, I highly recommend Coop’s Sanctuary Pet Bed. And while you’re at it, go on and get yourself a Coop pillow too!

Oh, how I love to drop off my dirty dogs at the groomer, and pick them up later all fluffy and fresh! Regular professional grooming is an expense that’s well worth it in my book. But with three dogs now, I’ve made some changes to keep our grooming expenses in check. I’ve doubled the time between grooming visits, and I’ve added an at home dog washing station in the garage.

Three labs wait pensively for their mom to put them in the at home dog washing station

dog washing at home

I first considered adding an at home dog washing station after bringing Lemon home from the beach. No one wants to bring a wet and sandy dog through the house to the tub inside. The weather was warm, so a quick bath under the hose outside did the trick. But leaning over to wash Lemon also did a number on my back. I wanted one of those elevated grooming tubs, so I could wash her while standing straight up.

There was already plumbing in the garage for a utility sink, so why not turn it into an at home dog washing station?! I started researching professional grooming tubs. As expected, they were pretty pricey. I hemmed and hawed on the purchase long enough to sell my home and move to a new one!

While I love the look of those luxury tiled dog washing stations, there wasn’t the space or the funds to add one at the new homestead. Once again, I began exploring options for adding an at home dog washing station in the garage. Frankly, the garage makes a lot of sense. Your dog is going to splash, and shake, and shed fur all over the place. And in the garage, I don’t have to care too much. When bath time’s over, I open the garage door, and use the leaf blower to tidy up. 😂

choosing a dog tub

If your budget allows, go for the professional stainless steel grooming tub with steps. And if you have large dogs, this might be your only option. But as my girls are 45-55 lbs., and I am able to lift them, I chose to save a few bucks by going with a large 24″ x 40′ Bigtub Utilatub by Mustee.

I added the Ashland Laundry Faucet with a threaded spout, and a Rinse Ace Sink Faucet Rinser. With the faucet’s threaded spout, the Rinse Ace attaches just like a hose would, though it does come with an adapter for other other faucets.

This might look like the perfect at home dog washing station, but let me tell you from experience, this tub is slick. Be sure to add some Secopad Anti Slip Shower Stickers to line the bottom of the tub. I also use a stainless steel basket filter trap in the drain to catch all the dog fur before it goes down the drain!

Complete the look of your dog washing station

I had this tub installed in the garage on the wall opposite the laundry room, allowing the plumber to tie into existing water and drain lines. This required elevating the tub about 6″. The extra height was easily achieved by adding 2×4 legs inside the existing metal legs, and painting them to match. (Thanks Molly at Wag-n-Splash for the tip!)

At Lowe’s Home Improvement, I purchased a fully assembled 36″ Shaker style cabinet, and two satin nickel knobs. It’s the perfect space for storing towels and other bath accessories. Also, I found some great backsplash tile on sale! Each 12″ x 12″ sheet was only $1.19!!

A yellow lab mix gets a rinse in the at home dog washing station

Accessories for your dog washing station

No at home dog washing station is complete without a safety loop to help your dog stay put while in the tub. I picked up an eye hook at Lowe’s, and added the Groomers Pro Jelly Pet Grooming Loop. And to protect myself from getting splashed, I chose the Ladybird Line Paw Print Waterproof Dog Bather’s Apron.

My favorite at home dog shampoo has been Cloudstar Buddy Wash Lavender & Mint Shampoo. It makes the girls feel silky soft, and has a fresh fragrance without being overwhelming. I use it with the Bodhi Dog Bath Brush! Its massaging bristles act as a deshedding tool to remove loose fur.

I honestly thought my at home dog washing station was complete. I joked that all I needed to be legit was a blow dryer. But once I saw how relatively affordable the SHELANDY 3.2HP Dog Grooming Blower with Heater was, I knew I had to have one!

The heater turns on/off separately from the blower, and it has an adjustable air speed, so you can work your dog up to it. Perhaps it’s from their visits to the groomer, but all of my girls already seem well adjusted to the blow dryer.

Lemon loves a good blowout

So fresh, so clean

This complete at home dog washing station is the most useful home improvement I’ve made in a long time! Whether I’ve brought the girls home from the beach, a muddy hike, or it’s just time to freshen up, this set up has form and function, and was priced right too!
