Cone of Shame Alternatives

Who hates the cone of shame? I know I do! Not only does it make your puppy pal miserable, they go knocking all into your walls and furniture too. Well, I have a couple cone of shame alternatives to share, both of which got four paws up from my own dogs!

Inflatable donut collar

When I was preparing for Lemon to have a mammary tumor removed, I began the hunt for cone of shame alternatives because I knew she’d hate it. That, and I had freshly painted walls, and I didn’t want her clattering into them with that wonky piece of plastic. I ordered a couple options from Amazon, and settled on an inflatable collar that looked much like a donut.

Put to actual use, this cone of shame alternative was a real winner! It has loops that you can thread your dog’s collar through to help it stay on. But Lemon didn’t really mind the inflatable donut at all, so all I did was slip it over her head.

The inflatable collar has a soft, removable and washable cover. As it goes around the neck, and does not cover the face, it’s less bothersome than a traditional cone. For Lemon, it was like she had a pillow on command at all times! Best of all, after use, you just deflate it for easy, compact storage. You never know when you might need this thing again!

Doggie T-Shirt

Depending on what or where exactly you are trying to prevent your dog from reaching, another great cone of shame alternative is a doggie t-shirt. Can you use your own? Absolutely. But I personally found this frustrating, as it’s not exactly fitted for a dog. I would tie it up in the back, but soon enough it was undone, and not protecting anything at all.

I was introduced to the doggie t-shirt when Olive was sent home in one after having her allergy testing. She was shaved on the side, and injected with allergens, so they expected her to be itchy, and scratching at the testing site. I mean, how cute is this?

Cute, yes! But also, super functional. The doggie t-shirt was a perfect fit! No sagging. No trying to keep it from falling off of her. And it did exactly as intended, keeping Olive from itching and biting the testing site. The brand of doggie t-shirt was Doggie Skins, and it’s available on Amazon in five colors.

But, let’s be honest. How cute are these?! I might have to buy Lemon the doggie t-shirt with lemons! 🤣
