What To Do With Dog Poop Until Garbage Day

Picking up after your dog

Every responsible dog parent picks up after their dog does their business. This is sometimes twice per day. And for someone having three dogs, this is sometimes SIX TIMES per day! Let me tell you what to do with dog poop until garbage day.

If you live in the city or a large HOA managed neighborhood, you may have access to public trash receptacles or pet disposal bins. My neighborhood doesn’t have anything like that. For every poop I pick up in my yard, or on a walk, it’s sticking around until garbage day.

I also live in the south where it gets hot. Even one bag of dog poop in the garbage bin can become quite an overwhelming smell. What does a responsible dog parent do? The same thing kid parents have been doing for years. I use a diaper pail.

About 4 years ago, I purchased a Munchkin Diaper Pail by Arm and Hammer and I’ve never looked back! Even during the height of summer, the smell of poo is well contained until garbage day. And my garbage bin remains as fresh as…well, as fresh as a normal garbage bin without dog poop stewing in it would be.

Even with three dogs, I only use one Munchkin Snap, Seal and Toss Refill Bag per week. I keep these on my Amazon Subscribe & Save Plan, along with unscented Earth Rated Poop Bags on a single grab and go roll. These are a nice quality, leakproof bag, and not at all flimsy. I love the convenience of the large roll and just grabbing a few bags on the my way out the door. Earth Rated also offers a compostable bag.

    1. I keep it right in the garage and it doesn’t smell at all! Don’t get wrong…when you switch out to a fresh bag, it will knock you down…but outside of that, it’s been the perfect solution. With 3 labs in the low 50 lbs range, I change the bag out once a week on garbage day.

  1. Do you have any issues with bugs (i.e. flies, maggots?) We have 2 Golden’s and I don’t want to go to empty the dog bin only to find icky bugs. I’m not a girlie girl really but those nasty little boogers make my skin crawl

    1. I’ve had no issues with bugs at all! I keep it in my garage. Not going to lie…when you open it to change the bag, you will smell it. But when it’s closed, you’d have no idea I’ve got a week’s worth of poop in the garage.
